Statcounter has reported that the Android OS (operating system) is now more commonly in use than the long-established Blackberry OS. The Android OS overtook its competitor Blackberry for the very first time in February; Statcounter said it registered a 15.2 percent of the worldwide user market.
The Blackberry OS was visible on 14.5 percent of handsets. Nokia's Symbian remained the top represented mobile operating system and appeared on 30.7 percent, while Apple, which is on second place, had 24.6 percent of the market. Although Android increased its share, the same wasn't true for the rest.
"The momentum is definitely with Android which has practically tripled its market share during the last 12 months from 5.4 percent to 15.2 per cent," said Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter. "In the same exact time IOS fell globally from 33.9 percent to 24.6 percent."
Although Nokia's Symbian shines globally, the same cannot be said for the US market, which is dominated by the Apple IOS with its 37.5 percent market share. Within the United States Symbian has just around five percent of market share and Android is on second place with 26.4 per cent. Mobile devices are increasingly being utilized for web browsing, said Statcounter.
